Lateness

Please send a note with your child if he/she is late. *For parents who pick up their children in their classrooms: after five minutes, there is a $5 late fee for every five minutes you are late.

School Supplies

Jewish study books are supplied by the school. Texts are to be treated with care and respect. Book covers are essential at all times. Books are to be returned at the end of the year in good condition. Damaged or lost books must be replaced.

Books may be replaced from Israel’s Books (897 Eglinton Avenue West) or Negev Books (3509 Bathurst Street).

Hebrew text-workbooks are provided through the school. Students write in these books and the books are theirs to keep.

Grades 3 to 7 students are to bring a 3-ring binder, filled with wide lined paper and subject dividers. Each student is expected to have pencils and coloured crayon or markers.

Homework

Grades 3 to 7 and Hebrew classes may be assigned homework once a week. Assignments are usually listed on a homework page at the front or back of a student’s notebook. Parents should ensure that student’s homework is completed and returned to the school on time.

Parent/Guardian-School Relations

DJCS encourages on-going parent-teacher and parent-school relationships. Parents may call on the teachers or the principal should they want to discuss information about their child’s progress or a concern that they may have. Should problems or concerns arise, it is expected that students, parents and staff will work together in a spirit of cooperation to reach an acceptable solution that will be in the child’s best interests.

Parents are also encouraged to actively participate in the classroom as a resource. Parents who wish to help out in the class should speak to the teacher at least one week in advance. Passive observing in classrooms is not encouraged and tends to be disruptive. In special circumstances speak to the principal.

Dismissal

Students in JK to Grade 3 will be dismissed only to parents or guardians named on the class list, unless a special dismissal form is completed. Grades 4 to 7 students will be dismissed on their own, unless other directions are issued in writing.

No student is allowed to leave the building during class hours without written permission from a parent or guardian.

Snacks

Please provide a kosher, nut free snack for your students to have during snack/break time.

Snow Days

In the event of a closure to due extreme weather, all DJCS parents/guardians will be notified solely by email.  Please ensure you are included on our DJCSNews mailing list.

School Notices and Report Cards

  • Class Meetings may be held in the fall, especially in the primary grades, to introduce parents to their child’s teacher and the course of studies.

  • Parent/Teacher conferences are optional and may be initiated by a parent or teacher. Please speak to the teacher if you have questions about your child’s progress or about the class. If the issues remain unresolved, speak to the school principal. Parents’ concerns are always welcome.

  • DJCSNews is emailed every week.  Report cards are issued in December and May.

  • Please check school bags regularly for homework or notes from teachers.
